It sounds like a dodgy metal band, but the Moravian Karst is actually an area of outstanding natural beauty some 30Km North from Brno, close to the town of Blansko. The Karst consists of a network of caves and underground waterways, as well as some beautiful woodland and decent hiking and biking. I need to get out of the city, and I’ve never seen anything like this, so it’s a no brainer. I only hope I can follow the directions and not wind up stranded in the bus station of some backwater.
The feeling of finding your way somewhere alien with no understanding of the language is incredible. I think back to my time in Moscow where I never believed I would manage to master the underground, but by creating phonetic sounds for words I couldn’t read, I was able to get by. Czech might not be as complex, but I still have trouble expressing destinations, bus stops and the like. I sound like an idiot, but it helps me remember the names. I make it to ‘SCALNey MiLLiN’ with little issue.
There are many caves and gorges in the area, but I opt for the most popular and most beautiful; the Punkva caves. Here you delve underground for some distance, including a wonderful boat ride into another world through the hidden waterways. It’s a 30 minute walk or a short ride on one of those mini train-bus things kids love. I opt for the walk. Didn’t expect that did you?
Alone for pretty much the whole day, it’s here I begin to recognise I might be a little mad. We’ve all been guilty of it before, but I’m going to come clean about something and see if anyone out there does the same thing. While I’m walking along, I sometimes do a multitude of odd things out loud. I do impressions of people in films, repeating famous lines to see how close I can get it to the original. I act out little scenes as if I were in the movie, making up the dialogue myself (some of this gets really weird). I sing songs often. I have mini fantasies that I play vociferously as I stride along. Sometimes I just talk to myself and make comments about what I see around me. None of this is in my head, and I’ve often been so in my own world I’ve not noticed some guy looking at me like I need a straight jacket. I am my own company. Traveling alone has its drawbacks; I think I’m going out of my mind. HEEEERRRREEE’S STEWIE!!
Anyhoo…back to the caves.
They’re really beautiful. You should go and see them
