Yes I did go out last night in case you were wondering. It was interesting.
I have spent the day wandering the streets of Olomouc (pronounced Olomoat) at leisure, with no real plans and nowhere to be. As much as last night was a big one, somehow I’m out early to take in the town in the daylight hours, and it is beautiful. The one thing that really attracts me though is the sheer absence of people. This is a university town, and I’ve been told that they make up the lions share of the population when they return, but this is still the height of summer, with hardly a tourist in sight. With only one hostel in town it could be a potential place to set up a business, asOlomouc is not going to stay secret for very long. Try and see it before the word gets out.
SK Sigma Olomouc, the towns premier league football team are in action today, so a few hostel dwellers walk the two minutes to the stadium to catch the game. Literally everything is only minutes away, yet still with the feeling of a decent sized city. The standard of football however isn’t as pretty as the streets, coming in somewhere between the lower Scottish Premier and division one. With a one-one score draw, the whistling fans make themselves heard as they are clearly used to better. I’m not having the best of luck with watching football on my travels, as every game has been a dead rubber. Even Boca Juniors served up a bore-draw. Perhaps at some point I might be perfectly placed to see the mighty reds, although not so mighty at the moment.
The town is riddled with history, attractions, beautiful churches and architecture, cobbled streets, UNESCO protected monuments, old city walls, castles and a nuclear fall out shelter. Unfortunately that is only open on Thursdays and Saturdays, a relic of the cold war and the iron curtain. I’m giving serious consideration to staying here to see it though, as I’m maybe falling a little in love with Olomouc‘s charm.
