I’ve decided to take it easy for the day (not that that’s anything new) and stay in tonight. Shock, horror, a Friday night and I’m staying in. I have a very good explanation for this however, which comes in three words. The Justice League.
Now I’m coming to the comic book world something of a late bloomer. In fact the only one I ever read in full was The Crow graphic novel by James O’ Barr. Naturally this stemmed from my 1993 obsession with the movie, whereby I won, for two years running, Halloween fancy dress competitions dressed as my idol Brandon Lee. It’s the only thing I regret about not having long hair.
I was a Superman fan as a boy. I had the wallpaper. I had the bed spread. I believe I still have this in a box somewhere too. Christopher Reeve was a legend, and I’d spend days running around with an ‘S’ on my chest and a little curl my mum hair-sprayed on my forehead. This was about as far as it went, and as I became older, ‘big blue’ was eventually usurped. Clearly the greatest comic book hero ever created is The Batman.
So I’ve been revisiting a childhood I didn’t necessarily have, and delving deep into the DC Comics world of The Justice League. The geek shall inherit the earth my friends. Now for me it’s all very well and good fighting off the bad guys, but what truly fascinates is the more human characteristics of the superhero, and the interactions they have with each other. The fights with the villains become almost interminable, as there really is no threat. At no time do you fear for the lives of your favourite legend, as you know they will always come out on top. In good versus evil, good always wins. Now I know why I’m such a loser.
Yet the real fascination for me is who is getting it on with who. In particular the Wonder-Woman/Batman romance. This needs to happen. I don’t know about you dear readers, but that shit makes me horny. When I’m done traveling, I’m ordering both costumes from eBay. Which one I wear depends on the kind of girl I end up with.
