It has been decided that it’s probably for the best that I don’t attend the wedding. It would be just a little too odd. As such following a new hairdo finally, Katty and myself part ways. I have had a great time over the past week and I would dearly have loved to attend the festivities, but perhaps this is for the best. I am after all traveling the world. The littlest hobo must move on.
In the early afternoon I’m sitting alone in a new hostel surrounded by people I don’t know, staring into space, or staring at an empty chair where someone I know should be. It’s not easy doing this alone at times, especially with my lonely disposition. My own company I can stand for all of an hour or so, after this I need something to work with. It looks like it’s just me myself and I for the foreseeable future. I think I need to find a new travel buddy.
Come the night and I’m bored out of my mind. I’ve not been doing much, so on a total whim I decide to don the kilt and test out the Berlin nightlife for the first time. I am not disappointed. People here are incredibly friendly. If I walked into a bar in London and tried the same thing I’d get total disinterest, surrounded by people preoccupied with themselves and probably told to fuck off. Hell it happened not only a week or so ago. Yet within a few minutes of standing alone at a bar I’m greeted warmly by a young crowd, one of whom puts me on the guest list for a club he promotes, another has invited me to see a football match next week he’s got tickets for. It just happens to be Hibernian playing a friendly game with a local German team. You wouldn’t get that generosity in the UK.
Over the course of the evening I’m more of less making new friends wherever I go. I’m literally speaking to everyone I can get my hands on, probably boring the pants off most with my world travel blether. It’s taken me a while to find a club that would let me in however, as they don’t have the lightest door policy here. One of the guys mentions you won’t get in to most places if you look like you’re not from here. I’m wearing a kilt. Lucky enough someone lets me in at the third club of asking, this is after I had slanging match with a bouncer because he didn’t let me in due to my dress sense. As much as I was attempting to incite an international incident, in the end I just realised I was just pissed.
A lot of drinks, a house party, a crazy hyper German girl and a nice bunch of students later and I’m waking up in a chair by a river. How, what, why, who, where and when I couldn’t honestly tell you, I’m just happy I made it home alive.
A parting of ways
